Isn't it a little late to properly start a season?

Time flies way too fast! It seems to me just yesterday that the season started... and we are almost in August! I simply never found the time for proper rides... cannot believe... at this time of the season I should have already ridden dozen of passes... that was my standard! But, in the end, the light... the 'sun arose' and yesterday I could finally go for a proper Dolomites attack... surely not the longer, not the one with most passes.... but, hey, damn fun! In 4 hours ride, across 4 passes, I could enjoy some sport riding, had fun with some other riders willing to keep up to my pace, without forgetting some nice or funny things to capture with a camera. With not much road traffic, the loop was across the wonderful twisties of Passo Rolle, the short but exciting Passo Valles, the damn fast Passo San Pellegrino and that mantric one (for me) called Manghen. On the Manghen is where I parked by a wonderful RC30... you don't see many of those around... we were the sole old irons among dozen of boring GS ridden by bored riders... I heard two of them talking about the ride and one was claiming he didn't enjoy the last part of the climb because it was too narrow.... dude! Get a life! Probably you are doing the wrong thing! As always my pace was all but.. .aehm... legal... and I couldn't keep rebel ego from showing off some proper disappointment... as one of the photos is clearly expressing.

Il tempo vola, troppo veloce! Mi sembra la stagione sia iniziata solo ieri... ma siamo già quasi ad agosto! Ed io non ho mai trovato il tempo per un giro decente... da non crederci... a questo punto della stagione avrei dovuto aver già percorso dozzine di passi... come da mio standard! Ma alla fine, ecco la luce, il 'sole è sorto' e ieri sono riuscito finalmente a fare un buon giro sulle Dolomiti... sicuramente non il più lungo, non quello con pù passi... ma, hey, maledettamente divertente! In un giro di 4 ore, su 4 passi, mi sono goduto della sana guida sportiva, mi sono divertito con altri motociclisti che andavano con il mio passo, senza ovviamente dimenticare delle cose belle o divertenti da fotografare. Senza tanto traffico per strada, il giro è stato sulle fantastiche curve del Passo Rolle, sul breve ma eccitante Passo Valles, il maledettamente veloce Passo San Pellegrino e quel passo ricco così mantrico (per me) chiamato Manghen. Sul Manghen ho parcheggiato vicino una fantastica RC30... non ne vedi tante in giro... eravamo gli unici ferri vecchi in mezzo a dozzine di noiose GS guidate da gente annoiata.... due ti loro parlavano del giro ed uno ha dichiarato che non si è goduto la parte finale della salita del Manghen in quanto troppo stretta... hey! Sveglia! Forse il motociclismo non è roba per te! Ovviamente in tutto il giro la mia meda è stata tutt'altro che legale... tanto che il mio ego ribelle ha voluto esprimere tutto il suo disappunto.... come confermato da una foto...

Everybody waves!

Incredible! June already, and I haven't had a PROPER serious ride yet! Sure, time is a killer thing, but, hey, weather in this late 2021 spring definitely was shit! I found out it became warm couple of days ago... damn, I was wearing winter jacket the last week! It was snowing up in the mountains! But today weather was forgiving, there was a day off in my country... and I took the change to carve 160+ km on some serious corners! Wow... after all the fucking lockdowns and pandemic stupid laws, it was nice to see traffic jams (for cars only) and an incredible amount of bikes cruising/speeding/touring around! Even more incredible was the fact that EVERYBODY was waving back!!!! Even the elitist GS riders! The world must have changes overnight! WOW!

Incredibile! È già giugno e non ho ancora fatto un giro in moto DECENTE! Certo, il tempo manca, ma il meteo in questa tarda primavera 2021 ha fatto veramente schifo! Ho scoperto che il clima è tornato a temperature decenti un paio di giorni fa... dannazione, andavo ancora in giro con il giaccone invernale la scorsa settimana! Nevicava in montagna! Ma oggi quel meteo è stato clemente, e poi c'era questo giorno di vacanza... quindi non ho perso l'occasione di farmi oltre 160 km di vere curve! Wow, dopo tutti i lockdown e le stupide leggi pandemiche, è stato bello vedere degli ingorghi stradali (solo per le auto) ed una quantità incredibile di moto in giro, in modalità passeggio, sport e turismo! Ancor più incredibile è che tutti salutavano in qualche modo!!! Anche tutti quelli appartenenti all'elitaria categoria dei GS! Il mosto è diverso, qualcosa deve essere cambiato drasticamente durante la scorsa notte! WOW!

Mirror issue at over 200km/h

Lock down, or whatever it gets called, seems to endure for whatever reason. Not caring about it at all, and with this warm spring day, I went out for a brisky ride, on the hills in my area. I wasn't the only one... indeed I decided to go after the umpteenth sport bike rode by in the streed next to my place. Racing leathers on and full throttle in my mind! Ha! The need for speed never fades away! Out there the traffic is close to zero, since no bar, pub or restaurant is open and people simply have nowhere to go; this way, before my eyes every road looked like a full speed playground. This led me to the issue mentioned in the post's title: the Mirror! After one of the sectors where I reached (and well passed) the 200 km/h threshold, the damn mirror bent inwards! Lesson learned: on a regular maintenance I usually check all bolts around, of course the important ones... and apparently I never thought the mirrors ones were among them! Once I ended my ride, a quick fix should have solved the problem:

Il lock down, o come diavolo lo chiamano, sembra continuare per qualche ragione. Non importandomene molto, con questo caldo giorno di primavera, sono uscito per una motosgassata sulle colline dalle mie parti. Non ero il solo... infatti ho preso la decisione dopo che l'ennesima moto è passata per la strada vicino a casa mia. Pensavo solo a tuta racing e gas spalancato! Ha! Quel bisogno di velocità sembra non scemare mai! In giro non c'è traffico, in quanto nessun bar, pub o ristorante è aperto, quindi la gente non va da nessuna parte; in questa situazione, ai miei occhi ogni strada si è trasformata in un parco giochi per alte velocità. E questo mi ha portato al problema citato nel titolo: lo specchietto! In uno dei settori dove ho raggiunto (e superato) i 200km/h, il maledetto specchio si è piegato verso l'interno! Lezione imparata: quando faccio la normale manutenzione di solito controllo i vari bulloni, ovviamente quelli importanti... e apparentemente non ho mai pensato che quelli degli specchietti lo fossero! A giro terminato, un veloce intervento dovrebbe aver risolto il problema:

Il giorno degli innamorati, giusto? Quindi... cosa c'è di meglio di portarla a fare un giro, dopo averle regalato un bel pieno da 100 ottani? L'amore è nell'aria... e lei lo ha confermato deliziandomi con alcuni rumorosi ritorni di fiamma, lassù nella valle! Che musica! Un po' freddino là fuori... ma l'amore riscalda!

Wintertime Mandatory Workshop Sessions (Mission accomplished)

So, in the end I finished what I started HERE and continued HERE. All put back together. Bike runs fine. I even test rode it. Sure, I could have taken everything apart, down to the naked frame to repaint it, but I decided to put a cover. Quicker, way cheaper... and there's always time for a repaint... No all I need is SPRING!

Alla fine, ho completato quello che ho iniziato QUI e continuato QUI. Tutto rimontato. Moto in funzione. Collaudo fatto. Certo, potevo smontare tutto, lasciare il telaio nudo e rivernicarlo, ma ho pensato ad un rivestimento. Più veloce, molto più economico... e per riverniciatura c'è sempre tempo... Ora serve la PRIMAVERA!

Wintertime Mandatory Workshop Sessions

 

Winter has arrived. Well, weather ain't bad... still pretty much riding compatible... moreover after the solstice, days slowly start getting longer... so it's all bright ahead after all. Looking forward to the next season! But, traditionally, winter is also a workshop time: it's way better to take your bike apart in these shorter, colder and possibly wet weather days, than in full summer, unless something serious breaks down. So I decided to do something that was much needed.  Few months ago I found out a crack on the frame, where engine if attached to, not far from the swingarm mounting place. The cause was a bold getting a little loose, the one holding the engine to the frame, from side to side. This, with vibrations and torsion, just kept stressing the frame in that exact point. Since I didn't realized it back then, the bike has been ridden in that condition for a while and this generated the crack you can see in pictures. In one of the services all bolts were set to proper torque, but the damage was already done and it kept worsening, even if very slowly. The whole swingarm and engine structure is holding everything together, so no worry (I've ridden it one or two season in these conditions, for sure, I just found it out during past summer)... but now I0d better take the chance of the winter time to fix this stuff, doing a proper welding and few other things worth being done, having everything stripped down. One of these things is servicing the rear damper... so new oil and seals are going in there, just to have everything back to top conditions when I'm going to put all the bits together in the upcoming days, getting ready for the new season. Some greasy and very dirty hands ahead... but it's part of a game I love to play!

L'inverno è arrivato. A dire il vero il tempo non è poi così male... si potrebbe ancora andare in moto. Inoltre dopo il solstizio i giorni iniziano lentamente ad allungarsi... quindi stiamo già guardando a un roseo prossimo futuro. Si pensa già alla prossima stagione! Ma, come da tradizione, l'inverno è anche un tempo per l'officina, per la manutenzione, per sistemare quelle cose che poi assicurano una nuova stagione ottimale: è molto meglio smontare la moto in questi giorni più corti, più freddi e magari umidi, che nel pieno dell'estate... a meno che non si rompa qualcosa di grosso. Pertanto ho deciso di fare dei lavori alla moto, lavori che era necessario fare. Qualche mese fa mi sono accorto di una crepa sul telaio, in corrispondenza di un punto di attacco del motore, non lontano dal punto di montaggio del forcellone. Per farla breve, tempo addietro, un bullone che fissa il motore al telaio, da parte a parte, si è leggermente allentato, facendo subire al telaio le vibrazioni e le torsioni, infine scatenando quella crepa che vedete in foto, la quale poi si è lentamente espansa, considerando che non me ne sono accorto e ho continuato a guidare la moto. Ok, successivamente in occasione di un tagliando quei bulloni sono stati stretti all'opportuna coppia di serraggio, ma ormai il danno era già stato fatto e questo ha dato inizio ad un lento peggioramento. Certo, tutta la struttura del motore e del forcellone tiene tutto unito, quindi non c'era nulla di veramente pericoloso (sicuramente ci sono andato in giro una o due stagioni in queste condizioni), ma visto che siamo in inverno colgo l'occasione per sistemare la cosa, saldare per bene e magari fare ulteriori interventi, approfittando della situazione. Uno di questi ha a che fare con il mono: visto che ho già smontato tutto, tanto vale rigenerarlo con nuovo olio e guarnizioni, per avere ogni cosa in ottima efficienza quando rimonterò la moto nei prossimi giorni, preparandomi per la prossima stagione. Insomma, mani sporche di grasso in vista... ma fa parte di un gioco al quale adoro giocare!
