The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

I have to admit it: I had never heard of the DGR (The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride). Or rather, I became aware of it in 2025, since the vintage motorcycle club I belong to was organizing one of these rides, but it was only in 2026 that I finally managed to take part in one... bringing along a few friends as well. The idea was born almost as a joke in 2012 in Sydney, Australia, thanks to Mark Hawwa, who took inspiration from a photograph depicting Don Draper (the protagonist of the TV series Mad Men, portrayed by Jon Hamm), riding a 1957 Matchless G3LS motorcycle while wearing an elegant suit: a powerful image that broke away from the stereotype of the rough, tough, and intimidating biker, presenting instead a motorcyclist characterized by elegance and courtesy.

Devo ammetterlo, non avevo mai sentito parlare del DGR, The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride. O, per meglio dire, me ne ero reso conto nel 2025, in quanto il motoclub al quale aderisco per le moto d'epoca organizzava uno di questi ride, ma solo nel 2026 sono riuscito a partecipare... coinvolgendo anche degli amici. L'idea è nata quasi per scherzo nel 2012 a Sydney, in Australia, per mano di Mark Hawwa, il quale prese ispirazione da una foto ritraente Don Draper (il protagonista della serie TV Mad Men interpretato da Jon Hamm), che cavalcava una motocicletta Matchless G3LS del 1957 indossando un elegante abito: un'immagine forte che tagliava nettamente i ponti con lo stereotipo del motociclista grezzo, brutto e cattivo, mostrandolo con eleganza e gentilezza.
