Winter Paranoia Act I / Paranoia Invernale Atto I

For a motorcycle rider winter is hard time. For a racetrack rider it can be even worst, unless you can find the time, the money, and the change to go racing in some warmer countries like south of Spain. It's hard to spend the evenings when you don't need to get ready for upcoming track weekends.

Burn baby, burn

Well, the season looks like being over again. I closed the racetrack activity (after 14 track days), and will probably do very little road rides as long as it won't piss down like it is doing right now. I had two track days in October. I improved. My best lap time in Adria improved. And I did it on the very last track day, despite the pretty low temperature.
I am left with pretty some stuff to be replaced before 2012 season. And I am not talking about tires and usual stuff you replace on a bike. My boots are dead. Helmet is aging. Gloves are worn out, due to extreme friction between my hands and bars. And my fucking tires heater set afire on the last track day.

Burn baby, Burn!

Finally on October 30th, I had some 140km ride on the surrounding mountains. Lovely. I could do it at moderate speed. And enjoy colours of the autumn. Hope I can do another one before it freezes. Bellissimo. Velocità moderate, in pace. Bellissimi i colori dell'autunno. Spero di poter ripetere prima dell'era glaciale :)

Rijeka 13.9.2011

Last POMPONE motoclub track day for this year.

As a motoclub we act quite differently compared to regular track day organizers.

Our aim isn't to book the track and sell as many entrance as possible. We care to offer high quality track days, with not so many people (to avoid too much traffic) and also we select the people: we are a club, we want to know people, we don't want any idiot with a motorcycle to show up and mess up with our events. This is also a reason why we set up riding schools.
Ofcourse we also need to have enough presences to cover costs. We don't really care about making money, we just need to cover all the expenses. If any money will be left, they will be used to book further track events.
After a rainy 2010 and a not so great 2011, the last track day turned to be ballistic. ONE HUNDRED paying presences. All boxes rented. Social race full (35 bikes on the grid). And still we hadn't much traffic, meaning that one could enter the track, enjoy, be safe and aim to its own driving and lap time eventually. On the lap time side I am very happy. I lapped 3 seconds faster than what I was, reaching a best of 1:46.5 on my GSXR600, on Bridgestone slicks, hard compound. Yes, hard compound, even though the hyper summer weather (it was really extremely hot) was screaming out for some softer stuff.
That was my first time on the Bridgestones, and I love them. The Pirelli were absolutely unusable there. They kept sliding everywhere, I couldn't proper ride. The day has been amazing. Very few crashes with nobody getting hurt. I even gravelled due to a tooooo late braking down at the Zagabria corner. :-)

I had an issue: probably the tip over sensor of my bike is gone and it kept cutting the fuel pump when riding over bumps. Changing line helped. So I believe I can do a better lap time when this is fixed.

The night before the track day we all arrived around there. Some 15/20 of us were having dinner at same place, VILLA SANDI (Best hotel, restaurant, service and kindness ever in Croatia!), and we had an amazing night (too much alcohol, food and too late at bed anyway). It was amazing having few blokes from UK and Netherland, coming all the way down here on some vintage laverdas and also on a Benelli Tornado 900/3 LTD.

Here, as usual, few pics. If you care being there with us, feel free to contact me or the club.

CENTO partecipanti paganti! Tutti i box presi. Gara sociale piena (35 moto schierate in griglia).

Riding School

Doesn't matter how good you are. I believe there's always something to learn. So on Friday 9th September we had this riding school in Adria Racetrack. Teachers were pretty cool: Non importa quanto tu sia bravo.
I must admit I learned a lot. I modified completely my riding style. I say thank you to Fausto Ricci for the patience and the high professionality he shows.
Ofcourse pushing your limits, and the fact we were all tired at the end of the day, can lead to some, well... unexpected happenings :-) No damages anyway, I continued enjoying the day and the track.

Problem: boots devastated.
Problem: no money, and, anyway, no time to go shopping before next track day.
Solution found.

Mid august bank holiday / Ferragosto

Well, in my country august means nobody working. Most services are off, most people is away due to holidays.
I am not.
Me and my fellow extreme rides mate decided to have 3 days in a row at Adria International Raceways.
Having few days in a row at track is normal, somehow, but Adria is a very demanding track: tires, brakes and human energy. If you add a temperature always around +35°C you get it.
But would have I spent those days in some sea place along with another coupla millions tourists? NO THANK YOU!
So there we went. 12 to 14 August 2011. Sleeping in the racetrack hotel, with a wonderful of corner 1 (named Ramata). :)
Io no.
NO GRAZIE!!!

Weather was perfect. Not a single cloud on sight.
And this event was somehow glorious.
Me and my mate started racetrack life in 1998, in Imola. (also a great year for me, just before that event I got to know the woman of my life and mother of my son).

After that event, we had another track day in 1999, and then our track life kinda of parted ways. The distance separating us is an obvious logistic problem, and that's it. After 13 years we are back together. With more experience, different bikes, and an extreme will to destroy tires, sliders, brakes and lap times :)
I still remember that day in 98. First time. We were young and we were sure to be fast (we were not, at all!). We were somehow scared. I will never forget in my life being in pitlane, by his side, opening up out visors and, well, that meaningful and deep emotion each others eyes. We celebrated our return by doing the same on the pitlane before the very first lap of day one this time :)

The days ran like alwasy. Tires getting killed. His clutch dying (big thanks Team Grandi Corse for getting us parts and a skilled mechanic!!).
Lap times improved by few seconds.
Simply great.

Fantastico.

We want to say big Thank You to all the guys there. Including Marco Lucchinelli & Cristiano Lucchinelli for the fun togheter. Marco Albizzati of MV Agusta for the kindness and the great information about their range of bike (and the test rides!). Antonio, without whom the paddock life in Adria wouldn't have been the same. Andrea Maida, my friend, instructor and great pilot.

All for now. Enjoy my pics as much as I enjoyed riding and being captured by the camera.

Rock n road

On August 9th we did a club ride.
We gathered some 15/20 riders, and we took some very twisty roads to get in Tolmezzo, where there's this test/training little racetrack.
The way there was a nice ride. We stopped for a great lunch at this lovely place in middle of the nowhere:

At the track we met the great BARRY RIVELLINI, former pilot, and now bikes tester/developer and riding school teacher.
After a quick briefing, very well done, to set clear the basic track rules for those new at it, we started enjoying the corners.

If you never had track experience, or you want to improve, or you don't really want to be on a post like this one, I strongly suggest to get riding school here:

A very enjoyable day. We were back home by 11pm, tired, after over 430km. Cool.

We also had a very weird guest. What we call MOTOSTOPPISTA (=Motorcycle Hitchhiker). A guy fully equipped for riding, but without a bike. He travelled everywhere just occupying rear seats of riders he meets on the road. A LEGEND.

The day of the idiots / La sagra dell'idiota

On Sunday July 31st I went to Adria racetrack. After a busy month I needed some twist of the wrist, and I had few adjustments to test out before more massive track days (like a 3 days event I have in coupla weeks).

well, I guessed no traffic due to everybody at sea for holidays.... and I was kinda rite.
Paddock was a mess. I thought there were one million bikes on track.
But the million was about noisy super motard bikes doing a track on part of parking and part of the unbuilt dirt area (and they were rising clouds of dust that landed on the racetrcak).
But on track, the real one, there wasn't much traffic.
Pity the quality: squids and sunday riders. I had to avoid and overtake all the time. Some, recognizing the 666 on mirrors (yes, they had mirrors!), learned to move the fuck off. :-)
But there were few, that did not die (sadly) that were the perfect example about HOW NOT TO BE ON A RACETRACK:
  1. Some newish ducati or honda. Dude riding so slow he was actually respecting town speed limits. He looked like made of concrete on the bike. At a point I counted the laps: I overtook him twice in 4 laps. I kid u not! After ONE day you're on track, you should have found some confidence. If not, dude, change sport or seriously think to take riding classes (and on this racetrack there are riding schools!)
  2. Two naked Kawas or Yamas or whatever they were (they all look the same), riders. They rode side by side like fucking 80s tv serie CHiPs, and even tried to talk each others. Were they agreeing at what time meeting up for dinner????
  3. A guy on a older R1 with a fantazilion amount of HP that he used on straight (really an impressive engine), but he could not do corners. Not at all. He almost walked on the corners. My little son would have overtaken him on his walker. Outside.
  4. The mate of a dude that crashed. He stopped, put bike on side stand (on track) and ran to his mate, disturbing the prompt intervention of marshals and ambulance.
  5. The dude that crashed, in point 4. He did it in a point of the track you simply cannot go down unless they shoot you or both tires explode (because somebody shot you) . Later I learned he wheelied Biaggi alike, but with no Biaggistic Wheelie Control. He broke a shoulder, pity not his head. Bike is a total wreck, a pure write off :-)
  6. An idiot that was probably on cocaine. Passed me in a point I slowed down as I wasn't risking life of the two ahead of me (two good guys that were learning). He did overtake all of us. Overtook the leading one outside as this one was getting close to curb. They didn't touch thanks to some kind of astral good luck. At following chicane he almost crashes (and almost sweeps us all in trying to get back in), 3 corners later he is wide and almost lost it, and after the main straight he is too long (I passed him then, so I ignore what happened, hopefully he crashed). All of this on same lap.

First and only time i see such a mess, and lack of good riders. I was the fastest, but not due to my superiority or high skill. Simply due to my experience and respect. I wished for some black flags. Instead we had enough red ones.

This untypical freak show apart, I settled to a pace of 1:29. And i did it on my Pirellis that already had Rijeka and Le Luc :-)

Bike was a little sliding, I loved it :-)

Anyroad, you out there reading me. If you're a road rider, you think you're fast, you plan to go racetrack, please listen to my suggestions:
  1. Respect people around you
  2. Repeat point #1
  3. Never stop on track, you'll do it when you crash. Look at the marshals. They are there for you.
  4. Track ain't soccer. Think. It's risky. You risk your life and other people's life
  5. Don't think you know it all just because you can drag your knee slider on your favorite road.
  6. Flags have a meaning. Learn them.
  7. Listen to me: take fast riding school. You'll be taken to a higher level of riding skill and you'll love it badly.
  8. Make sure you learned point #4 and #5.
  9. Point #7 will help point #6 out.
  10. Repeat all the above.

Zero! Quasi metteva giù i piedi. All'esterno.

Guarda i commissari. Loro ti spiegano tutto.
  9. Il punto #7 ti chiarisce anche il punto #6.
  10. Ripeti quanto sopra.

New Track (for me) / Nuova Pista (almeno per me)

I took the chance to try out a track that is located some 700km away. Since I was having my summer vacation in France, I decided to bring the racer along and try out this:
Circuit du Var, Le Luc.

The organizer, the Italian Gully Racing, is just one of the best guys ya can meet out there. Polite, kind, and great to drive all the way there to let us poor bastards racing like no tomorrow.
Pity he couldn't full fill the day, we were only 15 riders, but this gave us the change to really enjoy the track.

The track is funny. Ups and downs, mostly right hand corners, with a fantastic, yet, hard, main straight ending... on a soft (but blind) left corner, leaving then no space to back off to face the right hand hairpin that follows :) Wow!
Being my 1st time there I did a 1:01, which isn't bad... and at least makes me happy :)
Weather was superb, even if way too hot, and the company was great too. I loved the day.
Here a couple of videos and few pics:

Grande giornata.
