Both sides

All of a sudden I decide to halt my working day. 4pm, that's enough... and the sun shines.
I look out of the window and I decide to go up there:

Ridin on!

After the previous wet ride, I took the change to keep on riding. I mean, after I resurrected it, why letting it die again?
So I had a quick ride in my surrounding area, and then I took a Sunday noon and left pretty late.
OK, I watched Formula 1 on TV, and after that I rode away, with the idea of attacking not less than four passes, that in the end turned out to be six, arriving quite late, in total darkness (I knew it could happen so I carried the clear visor on the luggage!).
No hurry, no schedule, just riding till I liked it.
Some wet roads, but nothing tragic!

And I enjoyed the following passes (344km):

Long time. And I'm wet! But I am back.

The time between this post and the previous is the time I've been OFF riding.
Enough said?
Life's weird. Things happening all the time, you're living today and all of a sudden 3 or 4 months are gone.
Add that I became such a complex rider: I don't ride 30 minutes. I don't commute. I don't ride to the grocery or local pub. No more.
Either I have time for not less than 200km (I prefer 300 to 600), all of them across passess and twisties, or I don't ride. Add the weather, add the season, add the free time, add the fact that with time (and age: aka family, job, etc...) it's getting harder and harder to find "that perfect day" (and when you find it, it rains...).
Hence my total lack of riding
I miss the track day life (no track bike in my garage right now, hope to fix this soon!): you book and pay; you kind of "book your season" ahead, so you know with months of advance when you're busy riding... so it gets easier to plan your life. Street riding? For a reason of the other it always end in the "Maybe tomorrow" thing... and, fuck it, tomorrow never comes.
So, one week ago I finally found the perfect day. Or about.
First real ride of the season. 337km on 8 passes. Ain't bad for a beginning.

But I also had rain. A lot of rain. I got few drops on last pass or two, but AFTER it I decided to cut it short (my plan was for 4 passes more) as the sky was getting way too dark. And the you could hear the roar.
Rain started. Few drops again. I didn't even stop for rain gear... and all of a sudden the few drops became Colossal Rain.
I was WET in no time. Soaked doesn't even come close to the condition I was. But that wasn't it all! Wind was massive, visibility close to zero (and I had dark visor!!). Cars were stopping road side, hazard lights on... with me riding by. Any tunnel was a gift... but any bridge or overpass I had to go under was exactly like blind riding into a waterfall!
Road was a river.

E così iniziò a piovere. Ancora poche gocce.
Ero completamente bagnato in tempo zero.

Regular working day

When you can't stand the bad behaviour riding up in the mountain, you decide to search for a solution, which isn't "too lean/too rich"-crap related stuff anymore.
It's more of a "get the damn carbs off and rebuild 'em".
Which is what we did. But my workshop can be the best around, but they cannot test the bike the way I test it and experience the issue (or lack of it) in the conditions they used to appear (in the mountain).
So... I thought about my working day and came up with a brilliant idea:

Hibernation?

Some say that riding season ends when October ends. At least in northern hemisphere. And everything gets back by March or about.
Well, this "winter" season I don't really agree, as I managed to do some great rides by mid November (8th), New Year Day, and also mid January!
Sure, there isn't loads of snow or something, but surely temperature isn't one of those melting the tires and leading to a great grip.

So in mid November I did a classic one, a four passes loop (about 300km) that I really love:

-Passo Rolle
-Passo Valles
-Passo San Pellegrino
-Passo Manghen

The latter was closed, or kind of. On the north side, from where I was approaching, I find the road closed. These roads often close in winter, as they are not maintained and the snow doesn't get removed, so they simply close it the whole autumn-winter time. Other bikes stopped and turned back... I simply avoided the barrier and continued, without traffic... just to find out that on top there was people (and bikes)... coming from south (which was open). I was kinda worried as I couldn't fill up before doing the pass, and if it was closed on the southern way down I wouldn't have enjoyed the day so much! But everything turned out ok, and the day has been great!

HELLoween ride

It's fantastic to see weather is still nice, with good temperatures. And it's November already!
Many passes are still accessible, with clean roads and nice temperature up there in sunny days.

I remember back in 2009 we had a similar lucky season, and I also remember I did a ride on a October 31st, a ride I never blogger for a reason or the other.
Inspired by that route, I took the chance to ride this year on HELLoween day: perfect weather, lovely temperature and it was a Saturday!
I left pretty late, as I wanted the sun to give me the maximum benefit, and I rode some 280 km, crossing 3 passes, doing some exploration, taking few pics.

And enjoying the poetry of this autumn, with all the colors.

Route:

  • Mis Valley
  • Duran Pass
  • Staulanza Pass and back
  • Longarone and Vajont Dam
  • San Osvaldo Pass
  • Cimoliana Valley
  • Back via Longarone then south...
E siamo già a novembre!

Percorso:

  • Valle Del Mis
  • Passo Duran
  • Passo Staulanza e ritorno
  • Longarone e diga Vajont
  • Passo San Osvaldo
  • Val Cimoliana
  • Ritorno via Longarone poi verso sud...
