Epifania, Befana, Three Kings' Day, Reyes. And a Benelli...

There are different customs around the world when it comes to Christmas celebrations. Some people celebrate on the 24th, others on the 25th... even New Year's Eve is celebrated in different ways... the beauty of cultural differences. Then there is Epiphany. This holiday (January 6th) boasts very different celebrations and, in Italy, is perhaps one of the most original. Despite the strong presence of the Church (the Vatican is here...), the celebration of the Three Kings has a very pagan flavor areound here: there is this old witch (the 'Befana') who goes around at night, dressed very badly, flying on a magic broomstick, leaving gifts for children, usually inside an old, patched-up stocking. If we consider that in many other countries the celebration sees the three Kings bringing gifts (as in the Christian legend), the fact that there is a witch here is truly remarkable. So, with the celebration of the 'Befana', countless motorcycle events pop up, usually called “MotoBefana”: small gatherings for the most intrepid, for those who brave the cold. A motorcycle meeting open to anyone, often with games, food, and drinks, and with fundraisings going to charity. In my area, the Moto Club Ponte di Bassano organizes the traditional 'MotoBefana' right at the gates of the city's historic wooden bridge. How could I miss it? Benelli transformed into 'Befana' (Broom upgrade, now it flies!!!)... Befana wannabes 'riding' the Benelli, historic motorcycles, modern motorcycles, “torpedo” sidercars, a festive and friendly atmosphere. Cold? Yes. Rain or snow? No! Enjoy the photos!

Nel mondo ci sono usanze diverse per quanto riguarda le feste natalizie. C’è chi festeggia il 24, chi il 25… anche Capodanno viene festeggiato in modi diversi… il bello delle differenze culturali. Poi c’è l’Epifania. Questa festa (6 gennaio) vanta celebrazioni molto diverse e, in Italia, forse è tra le più originali. Nonostante la forte presenza della Chiesa (il Vaticano è qui…), la celebrazione dei Re Magi ha un sapore molto pagano da queste parti: c’è questa vecchia megera (la Befana) che gira di notte, vestita malissimo, volando su una scopa fatata, lasciando regali ai bambini, solitamente dentro una vecchia calza tutta rattoppata. Se consideriamo che in molti altri Paesi la celebrazione vede i tre Re Magi portare dei doni (come nella leggenda cristiana), il fatto che qui ci sia una strega è davvero notevole. Quindi, con la celebrazione della Befana, spuntano innumerevoli eventi motociclistici, solitamente definiti “MotoBefana”: piccoli raduni per i più intrepidi, per quelli che sfidano il freddo. Un motoincontro aperto a chiunque, spesso con giochi, cibi e bevande, e con raccolte fondi che poi vanno in beneficenza. Dalle mie parti, il Moto Club Ponte di Bassano organizza la tradizionale MotoBefana proprio alle porte dello storico ponte di legno della città. Potevo forse mancare? Benelli trasformata in Befana (ci ho installato la scopa... ora VOLA!!!)… Befane wannabe a cavallo della Benelli, moto storiche, moto moderne, sidecar moto “siluro”, clima di festa e di amicizia.
