Running away from the rain, across 7 passes

Weather is nice, but being so close to the mountains, a shower —or better yet, a thunderstorm— is always just around the corner. So I ended up riding 300 km... trying to outrun the rain. It literally followed me. I got caught in a shower on Aune Pass, but nothing serious. The next six passes (Rolle, Valles, San Pellegrino, Costalunga, Lavazé & Manghen) were dry on dry roads! What a blast! At home? Puddles everywhere! I’ve won! And the day after, on a leisurely ride to Monte Grappa, I set off in almost pouring rain... but I got lucky: dry roads and plenty of fun! Il tempo è bello, ma essendo così vicini alle montagne, un po’ di pioggia — o meglio ancora, un temporale — è sempre dietro l’angolo. Così ho finito per percorrere 300 km… cercando di sfuggire alla pioggia. Mi ha letteralmente seguito. Sono stato sorpreso da un acquazzone sul Passo di Aune, ma niente di grave. I sei passi successivi (Rolle, Valles, San Pellegrino, Costalunga, Lavazé e Manghen) sono stati tutti asciutti, su strade asciutte! Che figata! A casa? Pozzanghere ovunque! Ho vinto io! E il giorno dopo, durante una tranquilla pedalata verso il Monte Grappa, sono partito sotto una pioggia quasi torrenziale... ma sono stato fortunato: strade asciutte e tanto divertimento! Up there again

A ride threatened by a stuck caliper. Luckily, my mechanic fixed it... but the ride was postponed anyway, from a sunny day to a day with a less stable weather... damn it! Up there. But up where, given that most my rides do point up to a some mountain? Well, it's been a while since I've been up to Gavia and Stelvio pass, among the highest passes in the alps. When was the last time? Three years ago? Four? Please, check this blog backward... find out and tell me! (hint: HERE). So, I did it again, 530km... half of them in heavy rain! At least I was dry the whole Tonale, Gavia and half Stelvio... but some social network reported heavy snowfall something like two hours after I was on Stelvio! How cool! On a side note, my 20+ years old rain gear... just died. It fell to pieces. I abandoned it in the garbage can of a gas station somewhere up north (later I bought a new one). Some pictures? Un giro minacciato da una pinza bloccata. Per fortuna il mio meccanico ha risolto... solo che il giro è stato posticipato, da un giorno di puro sole a un gionro con un meteo molto meno stabile. Dannazione! Lassù. Ma lassù dove, visto che tutti i miei giri sono 'lassù' da qualche parte sulle montagne? Era da un po' che non facevo questo giro, sul Gavia e sullo Stelvio, tra i passi più alti delle alpi centrali. Quando è stata l'ultima volta? Tre anni fa? Quattro? Andate a cercare a ritroso sul mio blog e poi ditemi! (suggerimento: QUI). Insomma, ho rifatto il giro, 530km... metà dei quali sotto l'acqua! Almeno Tonale, Gavia e mezzo Stelvio sono stati asciutti... ma da qualche social network ho appreso che su quest'ultimo nevicava pesantemente due ore dopo il mio passaggio. Fico! Nota: la mia tuta anti pioggia, vecchia di 20 anni e più, è morta, è caduta letteralmente a pezzi, tanto che l'ho abbandonata nella pattumiera di qualche stazione di servizio su al nord (ma ne ho già comprato una nuova!). Of Rain and a complicated summer

My last post was in early May... but that doesn't mean I haven't ridden since. However, I certainly haven't been able to do everything I wanted to. I've had some personal issues, mostly related to my father's health and an incredibly busy time at work, but, still, I managed to ride. Shorter rides, some nicer ones... both bikes were not left sitting and covered in the garage. Of course riding when I had time, didn't leave me much choice... so I haven't had always the best weather: yes, I could check the weather forecast, but even if a friend wants to gift me with a nice barometer, I did ride whenever I could. And needed to. When you need it, when you truly need it, it isn't that shower stopping you. Right? So I had few rides on the nearby heights (Monte Grappa and Altopiano di Asiago), I had a night ride with the club, I also enjoyed longer rides. Below some random pictures of this 'complicated summer'... but is I type this in, I also had a longer ride, 500km of twisties. And rain, of course... but let me leave this for the next post.

Il mio ultimo post risale agli inizi di maggio... ma questo non significa io non sia più andato in moto. Tuttavia non ho certamente potuto fare tutto quel che avrei voluto fare. Ho avuto un po' di problemi personali, principalmente legati alla salute di mio padre in contemporanea ad un periodo molto impegnativo al lavoro, tuttavia qualche giro l'ho fatto, qualcuno breve, qualcun altro più lungo... entrambe le moto non sono certamente rimaste in garage a dormire sotto il telo. Naturalmente andare in moto quando potevo, non mi ha lasciato molta scelta... quindi non sempre ho beneficiato del migliore meteo: certo, potevo guardare le previsioni, ma anche se un amico vuole regalarmi un barometro, sono andato in moto semplicemente quando potevo. E quanto ne avevo bisogno. E quando ne hai bisogno, quando ne hai veramente bisogno non è quell'acquazzone che ti può fermare. Giusto? Quindi mi sono fatto vari giri nelle montagne qui intorno (Monte Grappa e Altopiano di Asiago), mi sono fatto una moto-notturna con il club, mi sono pure fatto un giro più lungo a est. Qui sotto alcune foto di questa 'estate complicata'...ma al momento di scrivere queste parole, ho già fatto anche un giro da oltre 500 km e tante curve. E della pioggia, naturalmente... ma vi lascio il racconto per il prossimo post.
