Foliage. My way.

Foliage comes from the French word “feuillage”, which literally means ‘foliage’ but which, in its meaning related to tourism, refers to “fall foliage” (i.e., autumn foliage) and therefore also to the autumn landscape, hence linked to that extraordinary explosion of colors that marks the end of the annual life cycle of forest plants. Obviously, this trend has become a real craze: people travel specifically to see the foliage, cameras and smartphones capture these scenes at all hours of the day and in all lighting conditions, while social networks are literally flooded with thousands of images—some more beautiful than others—of this wonderful spectacle of nature. So... could I stay out of this new craze? Here is my version of the ‘Foliage’ trend!

Foliage è un anglicismo (legato al francesismo "feuillage") che letteralmente significa "fogliame" ma che nella sua accezione legata al fenomeno turistico richiama il "fall foliage" (appunto il fogliame autunnale) e quindi anche il paesaggio autunnale, pertanto legato a quella straordinaria esplosione di colori che segna il termine del ciclo di vita annuale delle piante dei boschi. Ovviamente questa tendenza è diventata una vera e propria moda: si fa turismo per il foliage, fotocamere e smartphone immortalano questi scenari a ogni ora del giorno e in ogni condizione di luce, mentre i social network sono letteralmente invasi da migliaia di immagini — più o meno belle — di questo meraviglioso spettacolo della natura. Quindi... potevo io restare fuori da questa nuova mania? Ecco la mia versione della moda del 'Foliage'!

A Free Saturday: mountains, twisties, colors and SUN!

A miracle! A planetary alignment! A Saturday that should have been spent at home, working on modifications to the heating system (Winter is coming...!), all of a sudden became FREE. This is thanks to my two buddies from the motorcycle club: they helped me out on Friday (we had planned two days of work), but by 6 p.m. on the first day we were done! And what can I do when, all of a sudden, I find myself with a free Saturday, brilliant weather, and a perfect temperature? Well, if you’re reading this blog, you already know the answer! It turned out to be a 230 km ride across four passes: Cereda — a fast one despite some wet spots — Valles and Rolle (I usually ride them the other way around, so this was a fun variation on the theme), and finally Passo Crode d’Aune. Not a bad way to work on your home’s heating system! After all, I did the same thing: I converted a hell of a lot of fuel into energy! Isn’t that what any heating system does? For your immense pleasure, here are some photos... with those autumn views and colors:

Un miracolo! Un allineamento planetario! Un sabato che avrei dovuto passare a casa, lavorando alle modifiche dell’impianto di riscaldamento (l’inverno sta arrivando...!), all’improvviso è diventato LIBERO. Tutto merito dei miei due compari del motoclub: mi hanno dato una mano dal venerdì (avevamo previsto due giorni di lavoro) e, incredibilmente, alle 18 del primo giorno era tutto finito! (Grazie Testagrossa e Desmosecco!) E cosa fa un motociclista quando si ritrova un sabato libero, con sole che splende e temperatura perfetta? Dai, se stai leggendo questo blog, conosci già la risposta! Ne è uscita una bella tirata di 230 km, attraverso quattro passi: il Cereda — veloce, anche se con qualche tratto umido —, il Valles e il Rolle (di solito li faccio nel senso opposto, quindi è stata una piacevole variazione sul tema), e infine il Passo Crode d’Aune. Niente male come modo di “lavorare” all’impianto di riscaldamento di casa! In fondo ho fatto la stessa cosa: ho trasformato un bel po’ di carburante in energia! Non è forse questo, in fondo, il principio di ogni impianto di riscaldamento? E per la vostra immensa gioia, ecco qualche foto... con quei colori e panorami d’autunno che parlano da soli:

Dry!

After all the rain I caught on the last ride, I bought a new rain gear; the one I had was worn and well, not protecting me any longer. I binned it in some gas station up north. But I didn't use it (yet) and two days after the Stelvio ride, I found myself with a free and (most important thing) dry day (yeah!)... so off I rode, what else? I wanted corners, I wanted lean angles (well, I ALWAYS want stuff like that!), so I pointed the bow towards the mountains: I hadn't a plan, but it took me no time to find out one. So, Passo Croce d’Aune, just because the upcoming hill climb race offered me freshly painted racetrack curbs. Then Passo Cereda, a set of corners letting you use the edges of the tires, then F.lla Aurine, Passo Duran, then the fabulous Passo Staulanza. From here Passo Giau, they recently increased the speed limits... so I may have avoided any speeding ticket... and finally leading south via Cortina d'Ampezzo, Pieve di Cadore and Longarone. 314km! And a lot of fun!

Dopo tutta l'acqua presa in occasione dell'ultimo giro, mi sono comprato una nuova tuta anti pioggia; quella che avevo l'ho buttata in un cassonetto in una stazione di servizio da qualche parte su a nord. Ma non ho usato la nova tuta (non ancora!) e due giorni dopo il giro sullo Stelvio mi sono ritrovato con un giorno libero e (cosa importante) soleggiato (yeah!)... quindi sono salito in sella... cos'altro avrei potuto fare? Volevo curve, e volevo angoli di piega (beh, io SEMPRE voglio quella roba!), quindi ho puntato la prua verso le montagne: non avevo un piano, ma non mi ci è voluto molto per trovarne uno. Quindi, Passo Croce d’Aune, in quanto l'imminente gara in salita mi offriva dei cordoli appena ridipinti. Poi Passo Cereda, una serie di curve che ti fanno usare tutta la spalla della gomma, poi F.lla Aurine, Passo Duran e il favoloso Passo Staulanza. Da qui il Passo Giau, da poco hanno alzato i limiti di velocità... quindi forse stavolta non ho preso la multa... poi via verso sud, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Pieve di Cadore e Longarone. 314 km! E tanto divertimento!

Autumn! Early November! Wonderful colors! Mild temperatures! Why not taking enjoying an afternoon taking chance for a lovely ride? Luckly I did, because right now, mid November, despite the sun the temperatures have dropped down sharply and it's already freezing already!

Autunno! Primi di novembre! Bellissimi colori! Temperature ancora miti! Ed allora perché non prendersi un pomeriggio e godersi un bel giro in moto? Per fortuna l'ho fatto, perché ora, a metà novembre, nonostante il sole, le temperature sono bruscamente scese e si già gela!

What a weather. Wonderful temperatures. Cannot ask for more! Some trees are still stuck in autumn mode: a beautiful Spring that hasn’t yet realized it’s actually... spring time!

Che meteo. Che temperature piacevoli. Non si può chidere di meglio! Alcuni alberi sono ancora fermi all'autunno: una Privamera bellissima che non si è ancora accorta che siamo... in primavera!
